Sunwing Vacations Suspends Cuba Operations Until October Due to Fuel Crisis

Sunwing Vacations has announced a significant extension to its suspension of operations in Cuba, affecting multiple destinations. This decision stems from an ongoing fuel crisis that has halted oil shipments to the popular tourist destination.

Suspension Details

The suspension applies to all services operated by Sunwing Vacations Group—including WestJet Vacations and Vacances WestJet Quebec—from June 20 to October 9. Initially planned summer flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco have also been paused.

According to the company, flights to these resorts are set to resume on October 10. Additionally, services to Holguin, Santa Clara, Cayo Largo, and Cienfuegos will restart on October 25.

Ongoing Monitoring and Alternatives

Sunwing Vacations stated that they will closely monitor the situation in Cuba and provide updates as necessary. The company will contact all affected customers regarding alternative travel options.

Flight Options to Other Destinations

While operations to Cuba are suspended, Sunwing continues to offer trips to other vacation spots. Destinations that remain available include:

  • Cancun
  • Puerto Vallarta
  • Los Cabos
  • Punta Cana
  • Montego Bay

Background Context

This suspension follows a trend that began in February when Canadian airlines, including WestJet, suspended flights due to severe jet fuel shortages at Cuban airports. Initially, these airlines planned to resume flights on April 26 but have since faced continued challenges.

The fuel crisis stems from geopolitical tensions, particularly relating to Venezuela’s oil supply. U.S. actions against Venezuela have significantly impacted Cuba’s access to oil, leading to severe consequences for daily life on the island.

Impact on Daily Life in Cuba

Cubans have been facing increased challenges, including:

  • Countrywide blackouts
  • Rising prices for basic groceries

This situation underscores the broader impact of fuel shortages on both tourist operations and the local population’s daily existence.
