Escalating Violence Against Indian Terror Suspects in Pakistan
Over the past two to three years, a notable pattern has emerged in Pakistan, with numerous high-ranking members of terrorist organizations, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), being eliminated under mysterious circumstances. Local reports often attribute these killings to unknown gunmen.
Recent High-Profile Eliminations
- Muhammad Tahir Anwar: The elder brother of Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Maulana Masood Azhar, Anwar died under mysterious conditions last month. He played a significant role in the organization.
- Abu Qatal: A senior LeT figure, he was killed in Jhelum Sindh last March. Qatal had connections to Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
- Paramjit Singh Panjwar: Chief of the Khalistan Commando Force, he was shot dead in Lahore on May 6, 2023, while out for a walk.
- Mufti Qaiser Farooq: A close associate of Hafiz Saeed, Farooq was shot near a religious institution in Karachi in October 2023.
- Shahid Latif: The alleged mastermind behind the 2016 Pathankot attack, Latif was also killed by unidentified gunmen in Sialkot in October 2023.
- Khwaja Shahid: Known as Mia Mujahid and a senior LeT commander, his beheaded body was discovered in November 2023 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
- Akram Khan Ghazi: A prominent LeT commander, Ghazi was shot dead in November 2023 by assailants on motorcycles.
The Broader Context of Terror Network Disruption
The pattern of violence against these terror suspects has intensified significantly in 2023. Seven terrorists were reportedly eliminated over just seven months, indicating a coordinated effort against recognized threats in the region.
Additionally, earlier high-profile targets have also been eliminated. Mistry Zahoor Ibrahim, a key hijacker from the IC-814 flight incident in 1999, was shot dead in Karachi in March 2022, highlighting ongoing actions against influential terrorist figures.
As the situation evolves, the focus remains on the implications these eliminations may have on terror networks operating within Pakistan and their impact on regional security.
