PNE Announces Concert Headliners to Boost New Amphitheatre Attendance

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) in Vancouver has announced the concert headliners for its Summer Nights series, aiming to reverse declining attendance. This year marks the debut of musical performances in the new 10,000-seat amphitheatre, which is expected to open in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

PNE Attendance Decline and New Initiatives

In 2022, the PNE attracted slightly over 612,000 visitors, the lowest number recorded outside the pandemic years of 2020 to 2022. Officials noted that the ongoing construction of the amphitheatre likely impacted fairground operations. PNE creative director Patrick Roberge stated, “Our whole site has been under construction, and we haven’t been able to have our full fair footprint again.”

Headliners Announced

  • Blue Rodeo
  • The Guess Who
  • The Beaches
  • Nelly
  • Zedd

The fair is unveiling its line-up in batches, with the first group recently revealed. The lineup includes a mix of nostalgic and contemporary artists, aiming to capture the interest of attendees.

Concerns Over Ticket Prices

Adult admission to the fair rose from $6 in 2000 to $25 in 2025. Summer Nights concert tickets are priced starting at $49, which includes admission to the fair. Ticket broker Kingsley Bailey expressed doubt that this line-up could effectively increase attendance, citing economic pressures on consumers.

Need for Major Attractions

Bailey noted that to draw larger crowds, the PNE might need to focus on headliners with a significant global profile. He emphasized, “In this day and age where the dollar is really hard to keep in your pocket, people want memorable experiences.”

Additional Entertainment Offerings

Alongside the concerts, the PNE will also feature various entertainment options included in the ticket price. Performances such as the Wizard of Oz on Ice and the British Columbia Tattoo will be part of the fair experience. The PNE is scheduled to take place from August 22 to September 7.

As the fair prepares for its upcoming events, PNE officials are hopeful that the combination of a new facility and a compelling lineup of acts will boost attendance and reinvigorate the historic fair.
