Thieves Hijack Truck, Steal 24,000 Bottles of Guy Fieri Tequila

A shocking incident involving celebrity chef Guy Fieri and former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar unfolded last November. Two semitrucks loaded with over $1 million worth of Santo Tequila vanished while en route to a warehouse in Lansdale, Pennsylvania.

Highway Heist of Santo Tequila

On this fateful journey, the trucks were transporting 24,000 bottles of Santo Tequila, a product both Fieri and Hagar had heavily promoted ahead of the holiday season. The tequila was distilled and bottled in western Mexico, then transported to the U.S.-Mexico border before being dispatched to Texas and finally to Pennsylvania.

Elaborate Theft Scheme

The logistics company hired a trucking service to deliver the tequila. However, this trucking service outsourced the job to two fake companies, which created a web of deception. The trucks were reported to have mechanical issues, delaying delivery.

  • Inquiries revealed the transportation company was fake.
  • The trucking companies used counterfeit documentation.
  • The GPS signals of the trucks were manipulated so they appeared on course.

As it became evident that the tequila was not arriving as scheduled, Santo Spirits CEO Dan Butkus realized the trucks had been hijacked. The thieves had created fictitious profiles and handled logistics online, leveraging a scam tactic known as double brokering.

Impact on Businesses

The theft significantly affected Santo Tequila’s operations. With the holiday season approaching, they faced empty shelves and financial losses. Fieri noted that the business struggled to recover, costing them the ability to deliver products and even leading to layoffs.

Increasing Cargo Thefts

Experts emphasize that such crimes are on the rise. In 2022 alone, U.S. businesses lost over $230 million to cargo theft, driven by sophisticated online scams. Keith Lewis, from CargoNet, explained that criminals are increasingly utilizing digital platforms to profile victims and execute heists.

  • The increase in cargo thefts has risen by 1,200% in the past four years.
  • California leads the nation in cargo theft incidents.

Recovery Efforts

Despite the scheme’s complexity, law enforcement eventually located one of the trucks in a warehouse in Los Angeles weeks later. Detectives managed to recover 11,000 of the stolen bottles of Santo Tequila, but the second truck and its contents remain missing.

The incident serves as a cautionary tale for businesses nationwide. Guy Fieri shared his experience to raise awareness about vulnerabilities in the supply chain, particularly for small businesses, stating that even with significant security measures, theft remains a critical issue.
