NASA Scientists to Explore Mars-Like Salda Lake in Türkiye

Burdur, Türkiye’s Salda Lake is gearing up for a significant astrobiology event, attracting global attention as an analogue to Mars’ Jezero Crater. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will be among the participants during this three-day program set for June 5–7.
Nasa’s Astrobiology Event at Salda Lake
Under the guidance of Burdur Governor Tülay Baydar Bilgihan, the event aims to bring together experts in planetary science and astrobiology. It also welcomes students and young researchers. The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), the Industry and Technology Ministry, and Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University are collaborating on this initiative.
Event Highlights
- Science camp focused on space sciences
- Sky observation sessions
- Educational activities to engage youth
Salda Lake has gained the nickname “Türkiye’s Maldives” due to its breathtaking white shores. Its unique hydromagnesite-rich formations have captivated scientists, as they resemble the geological features found in Jezero Crater, the site of NASA’s Perseverance rover’s search for ancient microbial life.
Collaborations and Contributions
Turkish researchers from institutions like Istanbul Technical University have been coordinating efforts with NASA scientists in preparation for the event. The University of California will also contribute expertise, further enhancing the program.
Environmental Management and Tourism
Authorities are committed to preserving the delicate ecosystem of Salda Lake. An annual visitor cap of 200,000 to 300,000 helps manage the site’s sustainability. Key measures include:
- Prohibition of fossil fuel vehicles around the lake
- Use of electric transport for eco-friendliness
- Bans on smoking and barbecuing to protect the environment
- Limited access points to designated areas
- Deployment of mounted gendarmerie units during summer
- Lifeguard services with electric rescue boats
In addition to scientific tourism, Salda Lake has become a venue for international sporting events such as triathlons and duathlons, drawing hundreds of athletes annually. Recently, approximately 460 competitors participated in a duathlon event at the lake.
Public Engagement in Space Exploration
As part of raising awareness about space exploration, Türkiye’s first astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, is expected to visit Salda Lake on April 27. The site also attracts numerous international visitors, with South Korea and Russia contributing the highest numbers.
