Reports have emerged detailing disturbing practices by Greek police involving the treatment of migrants. These incidents reportedly include the use of masked individuals to forcefully repel migrants attempting to cross the border from Greece into Turkey.
Incidents at the Greek-Turkish Border
According to testimonies from Syrian migrants, these operations can be both traumatic and dehumanizing. One woman, referred to as Amal, recounted her family’s experience during an encounter with authorities.
Forced Return to Turkey
In 2025, while walking in Orestiada—a city in northern Evros—Amal and her family were unexpectedly detained by police. They had previously submitted an application for asylum in Greece.

Amal described a harrowing experience where they were instructed to surrender their phones and identification documents. This further escalated during a subsequent search at the River Evros.
Traumatic Experiences Documented
During the encounter, Amal recounted how her daughter, who was wearing a diaper, was subjected to distressing treatment. She stated, “They took it off; she was screaming in fear.” This indicates a severe lack of compassion and respect for human dignity.
Furthermore, Amal noted that the masked individuals, who had multiplied to around seven, used sticks to control the group of migrants. They herded Amal and approximately 20 other individuals down a track toward the border.

The actions of the Greek police raise serious ethical concerns regarding the treatment of vulnerable populations. Human rights advocates have continuously called for accountability in handling migration matters.
