Couple Faces Disappointment After New Brunswick Mix-Up Instead of Bermuda

In April 2023, a couple from Columbus, Ohio faced unexpected disappointment when their cruise to Bermuda was redirected to Saint John, New Brunswick due to inclement weather. India Jade McCue, 29, a photographer, and her husband Ian McCue, 33, a video producer, had anticipated a tropical escape but instead found themselves in chilly conditions on Canada’s Atlantic coast.
Unexpected Change in Itinerary
The cruise, operated by Virgin Voyages aboard the Valiant Lady, originally departed from New York on April 6. However, on April 3, passengers received an email notifying them that their destination had changed. The cruise was diverted to Saint John to avoid unsafe weather conditions in Bermuda.
Passenger Reaction
India and Ian expressed their initial disbelief upon learning the news. “At first, you think it’s a joke,” India remarked. The couple, along with Ian’s parents—who were celebrating their 39th wedding anniversary—had booked the trip months in advance. With only three days’ notice, rebooking was not an option due to their existing travel arrangements.
Saint John: A New Destination
The McCues and approximately 2,000 other passengers arrived in Saint John on April 8. As the city’s cruise season starts later in June, local vendors were not fully prepared for the influx of visitors. Despite the colder climate and some snow on the ground, India noted that the residents were welcoming and friendly.
Limited Experiences in April
While exploring the City Market and local shops, the couple found that many vendors were understocked. India commented that “Saint John in April wasn’t the most stunning” but acknowledged the destination’s potential in warmer weather. Ian expressed gratitude toward the local community for their efforts, stating, “Thank you, New Brunswick, for compensating for what Virgin Voyages won’t.”
Virgin Voyages’ Response
A spokesperson for Virgin Voyages confirmed that monitoring weather conditions ultimately led to the change. The company stated, “This decision was made to ensure safety for our Sailors and Crew.” Passengers who chose not to continue were offered full credit for future voyages, while those who sailed received $100 in onboard credit.
Though the couple was initially disappointed, they adapted to their unexpected adventure. Ian reflected on his parents’ excitement for Bermuda and the difficulty of rescheduling such a trip. Ultimately, they chose to make the best of their new experience in Saint John, showcasing a spirit of resilience and adaptation.
