Suspect in Sam Altman Home Attack Denied Bail

The suspect involved in the attack on Sam Altman’s residence and the OpenAI headquarters has been denied bail in California. On Tuesday, the California Superior Court ordered Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, to be held without bail due to public safety concerns. His arraignment is scheduled for May 5.
Details of the Incident
Authorities reported that Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to San Francisco. He allegedly threw an incendiary device at Altman’s home early Friday. Following this, he proceeded to OpenAI’s offices, where he attempted to forcefully enter, threatening to “kill anyone” present.
Charges Filed
- Attempted murder of Sam Altman and a security guard.
- Attempted arson.
- Charges related to an unregistered firearm.
- Attempted damage and destruction of property using explosives.
- Potential domestic terrorism charges.
Moreno-Gama was apprehended outside the OpenAI offices while carrying additional incendiary materials and a manifesto that advocated violence against AI executives and their investors.
Legal Proceedings and Defense
The San Francisco district attorney’s office believes Moreno-Gama poses a significant threat. His attorney, Diamond Ward, contended that Moreno-Gama is facing overstated charges related to a property crime. She emphasized that he is currently experiencing an acute mental health crisis.
Federal authorities got involved as Moreno-Gama faces both state and federal charges. The FBI is also looking into the situation more thoroughly, having conducted a raid at Moreno-Gama’s home in Texas on Monday.
Reactions from OpenAI
In response to the incident, an OpenAI spokesperson expressed relief that no injuries occurred. They emphasized that while the company welcomes debates on AI, violence has no place in society. They praised law enforcement’s swift actions during the situation.
