Inquest Reveals Soham Killer Ian Huntley Died from Blunt Head Injury

Ian Huntley, notorious for the 2002 murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, has died from a blunt head injury. The inquest into his death revealed that the 52-year-old was attacked with a metal bar while at HMP Frankland in Durham. Huntley succumbed to his injuries on March 7, 2026, in the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Details of the Inquest

The inquest commenced on April 14, 2026, presided over by County Durham and Darlington Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield. It was brief, lasting under five minutes. Coroner’s officer Bradley King confirmed Huntley’s identity, stating he was born Ian Kevin Huntley on January 31, 1974, in Grimsby.

Circumstances of Death

  • Huntley was serving a life sentence for his crimes.
  • He suffered significant head injuries after the February 26 attack.
  • Dr. Jennifer Bolton, a Home Office Pathologist, conducted the post-mortem on March 9, confirming the cause of death as blunt head injury.

Ongoing Investigation

A police investigation is currently underway regarding Huntley’s death. Anthony Russell, aged 43, has been charged with murdering him at the prison. The inquest was adjourned to May 27, 2026, for updates on the criminal proceedings.

Background of Ian Huntley

Huntley was convicted in 2003 for the murders of 10-year-olds Holly and Jessica after they disappeared on August 4, 2002. The girls were last seen leaving a family barbecue to buy sweets in Soham, Cambridgeshire. Their bodies were discovered 10 miles from the site 13 days later. A significant police search involving hundreds of officers had failed to locate them sooner.

During the investigation, Huntley’s then-girlfriend, Maxine Carr, who was a teaching assistant at the girls’ primary school, provided him with a false alibi. She was later convicted of perverting the course of justice and served 21 months in prison. Carr is now living under a new identity.

Next Steps

Russell is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on April 24, 2026, for a pre-trial preparation hearing. The inquest will continue to monitor the developments of the case following the adjournment.
