Conservation Authority Warns: Wasi River, Chippewa Creek Surge Post Heavy Rain

Heavy rainfall in northeastern Ontario has led to a significant rise in water levels along the Wasi River and Chippewa Creek. Local conservation officials reported that rainfall has pushed Chippewa Creek to its bankfull condition and elevated the Wasi River by over 25 centimeters.
Flood Watch Issued for North Bay-Mattawa Watershed
The North Bay-Mattawa watershed is under a flood watch due to rapidly increasing water levels. According to Angela Mills, the Flood Duty Officer with the conservation authority, the area has experienced more than 25 millimeters of rain since Sunday, resulting in concerning conditions.
Current Conditions
- Wasi River has risen by over 25 cm.
- Chippewa Creek increased by more than 75 cm and is at bankfull capacity.
- Many low-lying areas remain inundated, limiting their ability to absorb additional runoff.
- Concerns are growing for the Lake Nipissing shoreline and downstream areas along the Mattawa River.
Weather Forecast
Temperatures are expected to remain above freezing throughout the week. Daytime highs are predicted to exceed 10 ºC, with further rainfall expected. Forecasts indicate cumulative precipitation of between 50 to 100 mm over the coming week.
As a result, the water levels in local rivers and creeks will continue to rise. Conservation officials urge residents to maintain caution.
Public Safety Advisory
- Keep children and pets away from watercourses.
- Be aware that water levels can change rapidly, especially in urban areas.
- River banks are currently slippery and can pose serious hazards.
- Flooding is likely in low-lying, flood-prone regions.
This situation emphasizes the importance of staying informed and vigilant as weather conditions develop. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local authorities and prepare for possible flooding in their areas.
