De Minaur Seeded Third in Barcelona, Kasatkina Returns to Competition
Alex de Minaur continues to build on his impressive clay-court season after making history in Monte Carlo. The Australian tennis star, now seeded third in Barcelona, aims to extend his success at the ATP 500 event. He will face Sebastian Ofner, an Austrian qualifier ranked No. 82 in the world, in the first round.
De Minaur’s Rise on Clay Courts
De Minaur’s previous encounter with Ofner ended with a victory for the Australian in Acapulco earlier this year. If he wins, he may match up against either Hamad Medjedovic or Marco Trungelliti in the next round. De Minaur is defending points from his quarterfinal appearance in Barcelona last year, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. His recent performances in Monte Carlo have boosted his confidence on clay, including wins over Cameron Norrie and Alexander Blockx.
Koratkina’s Comeback
Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina is making her return to competition after a hip injury sidelined her since February. The world No. 72 is set to compete against fifth-seeded Ann Li at the Rouen Open, a WTA 250 event in northern France. A potential victory would see Kasatkina face either Kamilla Rakhimova or Elvina Kalieva in the second round.
- Kasatkina previously defeated Elise Mertens in Doha.
- She also took a set off Iga Swiatek, showcasing her early-season form.
- The Australian secured a first-round win in Dubai before her injury.
Aussie Representation in Various Tournaments
In addition to De Minaur and Kasatkina, several Australian players are competing in other tournaments this week. At the Busan Open Challenger in South Korea, five Aussie men are on the court. James Duckworth, the tournament’s top seed, is coming off two recent finals in Mexico. He will face August Holmgren in his first match.
- Adam Walton, seeded second, will play Hsu Yu-hsiou.
- Dane Sweeny, seeded fifth, faces Ilya Ivashka.
- Alex Bolt and James McCabe will compete against each other.
Additionally, five Australian players are also in the singles draw at the Wuning Open Challenger in China. This includes Li Tu, Moerani Bouzige, Omar Jasika, Philip Sekulic, and Blake Ellis. In doubles, Ethan Cook and Tai Sach are the fourth seeds, while Joshua Charlton is also competing.
In Florida, the Tallahassee Challenger begins with Australians Patrick Harper and Alex Bulte in doubles action. Blake Bayldon and Tenika Mcgiffin will participate in doubles events in Oeiras, Portugal, rounding out a significant week for Australian tennis.
