Attempted Murder Charge Filed in Attack on OpenAI CEO Altman’s Home

A 20-year-old Texan faces severe legal consequences following an alleged attack on Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. Daniel Moreno-Gama has been charged with attempted murder and arson after reportedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence in San Francisco.
Details of the Attack
Moreno-Gama, originally from Houston, Texas, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder along with nine additional charges. The San Francisco District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins, announced these charges during a news conference on April 14, 2026. Jenkins referred to the incident as a clear attempt on Altman’s life, deeming it a serious threat not only to Altman but also to individuals associated with him and OpenAI.
Additional Charges and Evidence
In addition to state charges, Moreno-Gama faces federal accusations related to property damage using explosives and unregistered firearm possession. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.
According to an affidavit from the FBI, security footage captured Moreno-Gama throwing the incendiary device at Altman’s home shortly after 3:30 AM on a Friday. Afterward, he reportedly headed to OpenAI’s headquarters. There, he attempted to break the building’s glass doors with a chair, declaring intentions to harm anyone inside.
Items Recovered at the Scene
Upon Moreno-Gama’s arrest, law enforcement discovered several incendiary devices, a container filled with kerosene, and a lighter. A document found with him contained anti-technology sentiments directed at AI and tech executives, including Sam Altman. The document stated that he had either killed or attempted to kill Altman to convey sincerity in his message.
Public Reactions
Altman, whose leadership at OpenAI has placed him at the forefront of conversations about artificial intelligence, addressed the incident in a blog post. He acknowledged the intense scrutiny the tech industry faces but urged for a more constructive dialogue. “While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics, and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally,” he said.
District Attorney Jenkins also addressed the situation, criticizing what she referred to as “incendiary rhetoric” surrounding AI’s impact on society. She emphasized that no individual should be threatened with violence due to differing opinions or fears regarding technology.
