William Burford Honored as Outstanding Citizen

The Kewanee Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Club has selected William “Willie” Burford as the 2026 Outstanding Citizen for his exceptional service to the community.

Honoring William Burford’s Community Contributions

Ambassador Club member Dave Harker praised Burford for his longstanding dedication to Kewanee and its surrounding areas. Burford is well-known for his association with Rux Funeral Home, where he has made significant contributions since 2002.

Background and Education

  • Born and raised in Galesburg, Illinois
  • Graduated from Galesburg High School in 1995
  • Earned a summa cum laude degree from Southern Illinois University School of Mortuary Science in 1997

Before moving to Kewanee, Burford worked at G. Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. His commitment to the community has made him a beloved figure among residents.

Family Life

Burford lives in Kewanee with three children: Maddie (21), Makenna (20), and Braley (19). He is also a stepfather to Bridget (Drayson) Owens and her family, as well as Cameron (Pamela) Wirth and their children.

Community Engagement

As the Kiwanis advisor to the Wethersfield Key Club, Burford plays a pivotal role in youth development. He co-chairs the annual Kiwanis Pancake Day with 2019 Outstanding Citizen Everett Whitcher, a position he has held for 13 years. Additionally, he emcees various Kewanee Chamber events including the popular Hog Days Parade.

Personal Interests

Outside his professional responsibilities, Burford is passionate about sports. He avidly follows his son’s college baseball games and enjoys spending time outdoors with his family. A die-hard Detroit Lions fan, he remains supportive regardless of game outcomes.
