The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced funding for local museums, including a significant grant for Reading Museum. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to arts and culture across the UK.

Reading Museum Receives Grant to Revamp Roman Heritage

On the recent funding announcement by DCMS, Reading Museum is set to receive substantial financial support. The museum will be awarded £4 million, which will be distributed among 24 local museums. Reading Museum’s total funding includes £714,785 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with £236,808 in cash contributions, and £28,000 in non-cash support. This non-cash support encompasses volunteer efforts and specialized expertise.

Highlights of the Revamp

The museum’s upcoming Calleva Gallery aims to present the ruins and archaeological history of Silchester. Silchester is recognized as one of Britain’s most important Roman towns.

Among the notable artefacts that will be on display in the Calleva Gallery are:

This funding and subsequent renovations will significantly enhance the presentation of Reading’s Roman heritage, making it more accessible and engaging for visitors.
