Gulyás Gergely: High Turnout Favors Fidesz According to Experience

Gulyás Gergely, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, shared insights on voter turnout and its implications for the upcoming election. He spoke with Munk Vera, the founding editor of Telex and the director responsible for innovation and new markets at the Slovak publication Denník N. Gulyás noted that historically, high voter turnout tends to favor the Fidesz party.
High Voter Turnout and Fidesz
During the conversation, Gulyás emphasized the importance of voter engagement. He remarked that the presence of high turnout historically benefits Fidesz, although he acknowledged that 2002 was an exception where Fidesz lost despite a strong voter turnout. He expressed anticipation for this outcome, stating, “Tonight, we will see if this trend continues.”
Analysis of Participation Rates
- Gulyás commented on early turnout statistics reported at 9 a.m.
- He indicated that participation in smaller towns and villages was lower than in previous elections.
Response to Potential Outcomes
When asked if he would congratulate competitor Magyar Péter of the Tisza Party if they won, Gulyás stated that such customs depended on the outcome. Traditionally, Fidesz thanks voters for their trust when they win and congratulates the victors when they do not. This, he believes, outlines a contrast between the right and the left in Hungarian politics.
Gulyás concluded his remarks by reinforcing the belief that high turnout plays a crucial role in electoral success for Fidesz, hinting at the importance of voter engagement as the elections approach.
