Thijs Wiersma: “I Threw My Skates, Not the Wrong Sport”

Thijs Wiersma has made headlines by achieving remarkable feats in both ice skating and cycling. This weekend, he triumphed at the prestigious Paris-Roubaix cycling event, showcasing his versatile athletic abilities. Wiersma, a dominant figure in junior ice skating, has proven that excelling in multiple sports is entirely possible.

Victory at Paris-Roubaix

On Sunday, Wiersma secured first place at the Paris-Roubaix, defeating European Champion Karl Herzog. He expressed his joy and relief after the race, stating, “It’s magnificent to win here with this crowd. I’ve trained all winter for moments like this.”

Approximately 24 kilometers from the finish line, Wiersma increased his pace, while breakaway riders, including fellow Dutch cyclist Gijs Winters, led the charge. Wiersma remarked on the race’s intensity and tactical nature, stating, “It was very tactical from the start. We were a group of six or seven riders, closely monitoring each other.”

Race Strategy and Tactics

The Dutch team had a predefined strategy, with Winters making an early move. However, Wiersma chose to conserve his energy initially. He recounted the critical moments: “I was waiting for a good opportunity. When I saw a gap, I jumped on Gijs’s wheel, and we pulled away together.”

As they approached the velodrome, Wiersma found himself competing against Herzog and his teammate Dean Woolley. Despite Woolley’s efforts, he was unable to maintain the pace with just five kilometers remaining. Wiersma said, “I knew it would be tough, especially with the headwind in the final stretch.”

Final Push to Victory

In the closing meters of the race, Herzog made a strong comeback. Wiersma noted, “I felt good but hoped he would tire. He was solid, though. In the final straight, I gave it everything. I wasn’t sure if it would be enough, but I threw my skates across the finish line.”

This victory cements Wiersma’s status as a dual-sport athlete, excelling in both ice skating and cycling. His journey demonstrates that dedication and focus can lead to success across athletic disciplines.
