Novice Runner Trains for London Marathon to Honor Late Mother

Abi Stevens, a 28-year-old from Silsden, is preparing to run her first marathon. She will participate in the TCS London Marathon, aiming to honor her late mother and celebrate her best friend’s courageous recovery.

Motivation Behind the Marathon

Abi’s mother, Julie, passed away last September after battling oesophageal cancer. During her illness, she received care at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, which profoundly impacted Abi and her family. Abi stated, “The care at Sue Ryder was unbelievable. They made her as comfortable as possible.”

A Personal Tribute

  • Mother’s Care: Julie spent her final weeks at the hospice, where the staff went above and beyond to ensure her comfort.
  • Memorable Moments: From serving her favorite Kenco coffee to providing unexpected treats like free ice cream, these gestures meant a lot to Abi and her family.

Running the London Marathon represents more than just a physical challenge for Abi. It serves as a heartfelt tribute to her mother, who she admired greatly. “I want to give back to Sue Ryder and help other families going through the same thing,” she expressed.

Celebrating Friendship

In addition to honoring her mother, Abi runs in celebration of her best friend, Megan. Megan received an all-clear diagnosis after overcoming stage four cancer earlier this year. This journey further fuels Abi’s determination.

Training Journey

Despite being a spin instructor, Abi describes herself as “not a runner.” She admits that training has been challenging, especially during long runs. “Running 20 miles alone can be tough. You start questioning why you’re doing this,” she reflected. However, the memory of her mother and the strength of her friend keeps her motivated.

Support the Cause

Through her marathon endeavor, Abi aims to raise funds for Sue Ryder, an organization that offers crucial support to families dealing with terminal illness. “It just feels right to do something for them,” she stated, expressing her hope to make a positive difference.
