The UK is set to experience a significant upgrade in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with BYD’s introduction of its ultra-rapid ‘Flash’ chargers. These high-power charging stations will offer a remarkable charging capability of up to 1,500 kW, making them four times more powerful than current industry standards.

BYD plans to install 300 of these advanced chargers across the UK within the next year. This initiative is part of a broader global plan to establish 6,000 charging stations worldwide. The chargers will support a charging standard widely used across the UK and Europe, the CCS2 plug.
Enhanced Charging Speed and Range
The first vehicle compatible with the 1,500 kW chargers will be the Denza Z9 GT, which is set to launch in the UK. This car can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, achieving a full charge of 97% in nine minutes, providing over 640 miles of driving range.

Accessibility of the Charging Network
BYD emphasizes that its charging network is open to all EVs that utilize the CCS2 standard. Diego Pareschi, BYD’s director of charging, noted the importance of integration within the current landscape of charging solutions. Early customers of the Denza Z9 GT will benefit from 18 months of complimentary charging through a service called Flash Pass.

While the Denza Z9 GT is currently the only model designed to utilize the full capacity of these chargers, BYD is expected to introduce more vehicles capable of similar charging performances in the near future. The company also highlights that while these chargers are incredibly fast, an EV’s compatibility dictates its maximum charging rate.
