October General Conference Reveals No New Temples Announcements

During the 195th Semiannual General Conference, President Dallin H. Oaks confirmed that no new temples will be announced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This decision reflects the current focus on temples already in the early stages of planning and construction.

Reasons for No New Temple Announcements

President Oaks indicated that the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reached a consensus to hold off on new temple announcements. He emphasized the importance of managing the growth of temples already underway. “It is appropriate that we slow down the announcement of new temples,” he stated.

Temple Construction Status

The church is currently engaged in numerous temple projects. During President Russell M. Nelson’s leadership, a remarkable 200 new temples have been announced. However, with many projects in progress, the church seeks to streamline its temple expansion efforts.

Historical Context of Temple Announcements

  • The role of announcing new temples traditionally falls to the president of the church.
  • President Spencer W. Kimball, for instance, delegated the announcement of the Taipei Taiwan Temple to President Gordon B. Hinckley on March 31, 1982.

The emphasis on managing existing projects reflects a strategic approach within the church regarding temple development. As announced during this conference, the focus shifts toward maximizing current resources before further expansion.
