Soo Jr. Greyhounds Reveal Locker Room Condition: ‘Photos Not Ours to Share’

The Soo Jr. Greyhounds faced a significant setback in their quest for a championship title after a recent incident forced them to forfeit a crucial game. This forfeiture stemmed from the condition of their locker room, which prompted the Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA) to cancel the decisive game against the Copper Cliff U18 AA Reds.

Soo Jr. Greyhounds Forfeit Key Game

The Jr. Greyhounds had been competing in a best-of-three series, splitting the first two games with the Reds on March 28. The final game was scheduled for the following morning but was ultimately canceled due to the unkempt state of the dressing room.

Details of the Incident

Upon leaving the arena in Blind River, the Jr. Greyhounds received an email from the NOHA stating that the game was postponed. The NOHA cited the “unkempt state” of the dressing room as the reason. In their communication, the Jr. Greyhounds described the situation as an “unfortunate oversight.” However, within a day or two, the NOHA escalated the situation from a postponement to a forced forfeit. They claimed that the cancellation disrupted the series’s continuity.

Team Response and Apology

Jr. Greyhounds manager Lindsay Fera confirmed that the team would not engage in interviews, as the matter is under appeal with Hockey Canada. Although Fera did not provide visual evidence of the locker room’s condition, she noted that it contained just 13 water and Gatorade bottles, a towel, some tape, and wrappers. She emphasized that no vandalism or significant damage occurred, and the players accepted responsibility, apologizing for the oversight.

  • Date of Incident: March 28
  • Location: Blind River Arena
  • Opponents: Copper Cliff U18 AA Reds
  • No. of Games Played: 2
  • Forfeited Game: Scheduled for March 29

Impact on Championship Bid

The forfeiture has ended the Soo Jr. Greyhounds’ hopes of competing in the provincial championship for their age group. This event is set to take place in Kitchener starting April 17. As a result, the NOHA will be represented by the Copper Cliff Reds instead.

Community Support and Future Steps

The Jr. Greyhounds have issued a letter of apology to both the Town of Blind River and the arena. Their apology has been accepted, and the town expressed willingness to host the third game if circumstances allow it. Attempts to discuss the locker room situation with Blind River officials have not yielded a response.

As the appeal process unfolds, stakeholders await further clarity on this situation. The Jr. Greyhounds continue to navigate the challenges that have arisen from this incident, hoping for a resolution that will allow them to compete in the future.
