U.S. Mid-Am Champ Recovers Historic Driver, Shipped Overnight to Augusta

Brandon Holtz, the recent winner of the U.S. Mid-Amateur, faced a unique challenge ahead of his Masters debut. After winning the championship, he donated the driver that helped him clinch victory to the USGA Golf Museum. However, just days before the tournament, Holtz realized he needed his prized club back.
Historic Driver Returns to Augusta
Holtz won his title with an impressive 3-and-2 victory over Jeg Coughlin III at the Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, last September. Key to his success was his 8-degree Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond driver, fitted with a Ventus Black 7X shaft.
Urgent Request for Help
In preparation for the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, Holtz struggled with his new driver. He reached out for assistance, prompting Nick Bova, the golf director at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, New Jersey, to contact USGA CEO Mike Whan shortly after 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
Rapid Recovery Process
- Holtz’s original driver was sent to the USGA Golf Museum for permanent preservation.
- Whan acted quickly to retrieve the club from the museum.
- A USGA staffer successfully delivered the driver to UPS for an overnight shipment.
The crucial delivery was timed perfectly, ensuring the club would arrive in Augusta, Georgia, by Wednesday morning. With this swift recovery, Holtz aimed to regain his competitive edge as he prepared to take on the prestigious Masters Tournament.
