The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has established a new command center in the Spratly Islands, a strategic region in the South China Sea. This initiative was officially inaugurated on March 23, 2024, during a ceremony at Pagasa Island, also known as Thitu Island.
Details of the New Coast Guard Command
The new command center marks the first dedicated facility of its kind in the Spratly chain. It will oversee an area of approximately 68,000 square kilometers (about 26,000 square miles). The command, previously managed from Palawan, aims to enhance naval operations in this contested maritime area.

Response to Maritime Challenges
During the establishment ceremony, PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan emphasized the priority of defending the Kalayaan Island Group. With tensions high, multiple Chinese Coast Guard vessels were observed patrolling nearby waters, demonstrating the ongoing complexities in the region.
Infrastructure and Community Support
Plans are underway to dredge a deeper port at Pagasa Island, enabling larger coast guard vessels to dock. Currently, personnel must be ferried via smaller boats. Additionally, the Kota and Parola islands will upgrade their facilities to full station status, enhancing regional security.
The command center will also boost the local community in Pagasa, which is inhabited by around 400 individuals, primarily fishermen and their families. This development will lead to increased budget allocations for essential services such as education and healthcare.
