Sarnia MP Defects, Liberals Lose Majority Control in Parliament

The political landscape in Canada has shifted as Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong MP Marilyn Gladu has defected to the Liberal Party. This move reduces the government’s control, bringing them one step away from a majority in Parliament.
Marilyn Gladu Joins the Liberals
Marilyn Gladu’s decision to cross the floor was announced in a recent statement. She expressed that aligning with Prime Minister Mark Carney was a decision driven by the need to prioritize her community and the nation.
Impact on Government Majority
Gladu’s defection marks a significant development for the Liberal Party. She is now the fifth Member of Parliament to join the Liberals since the 2025 federal election. This includes:
- Chris d’Entremont
- Michael Ma
- Matt Jeneroux
These former Conservatives switched their allegiance to the Liberals between November 2025 and February 2026. Additionally, in March, Nunavut MP Lori Idlout made headlines by leaving the NDP for the Liberals.
Upcoming Byelections
This strategic move comes just ahead of three critical byelections scheduled for Monday. The outcome of these elections could further reshape the balance of power in Parliament.
If the Liberals secure a victory in any of the three seats, they will officially reclaim majority control in the House of Commons.
