Apostles to Lead Church Until First Presidency Reorganization, Leader States

The 195th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints commenced with a significant announcement regarding church leadership. Elder Henry B. Eyring, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, informed attendees that the church will be guided by the Quorum of the Twelve until the First Presidency is reorganized.
Apostolic Interregnum: A Historical Context
This transitional period, termed an apostolic interregnum, has historical precedence in the church’s past. Elder Eyring noted that this situation has erupted multiple times throughout the church’s history, with the last occurrence being in 1951 after President George Albert Smith’s death.
Leadership Transition
- The late President Russell M. Nelson passed away at the age of 101.
- Elder Dallin H. Oaks is anticipated to assume the role of church president.
- Both Elder Eyring and President Oaks have stepped into their positions in the Quorum of the Twelve based on seniority.
During the conference, President Oaks delivered introductory remarks and was reaffirmed as president of the Quorum of the Twelve. He emphasized the importance of the conference, outlining its agenda was set by President Nelson prior to his passing.
Tribute to President Nelson
President Oaks honored President Nelson, reflecting on the impact he had on church leadership and his personal life. “I love Russell M. Nelson and have learned more about the gospel from him than any other leader,” he stated.
Tragedy and Reflection
The conference occurred amid mourning for both national tragedies and the loss of President Nelson. Elder Gary E. Stevenson addressed a recent violent incident at a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The tragedy, which occurred on September 29, resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to eight others.
- Date of incident: September 29, 2025
- Location: Grand Blanc Township, Michigan
- Casualties: 4 deceased, 8 injured
Elder Stevenson acknowledged the collective pain experienced by the community, urging church members to spread messages of peace and understanding, especially online. He advocated for thoughtful communication, encouraging individuals to consider the impact of their words.
Looking Ahead
