Asghar Farhadi Urges Filmmakers to Address Intensifying US-Iran Tensions

Asghar Farhadi, the acclaimed Iranian director, has made a passionate appeal for filmmakers to denounce the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. This call comes amidst rising fears of US military action against Iran under President Donald Trump. Farhadi’s urgent message emphasizes the importance of artistic expression as a means of advocacy during these precarious times.
Farhadi’s Call to Action
In a statement shared with Iranian journalist Mansour Jahani, Farhadi condemned the US for its threats to intensify attacks on Iranian infrastructure, which the director labeled as a war crime. He urged creative professionals worldwide to unite against the destruction of vital civilian infrastructure in Iran.
Concerns Over US Military Threats
On April 7, 2023, Trump warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international traffic by 1:00 BST on April 8. If not, he stated that the US would significantly escalate its military operations. This included potential strikes on railways and other critical infrastructures.
Trump’s ominous message on Truth Social claimed, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” In response, Farhadi called for a collective voice to oppose this “inhumane, illegal, and destructive process.” He emphasized that the destruction of infrastructure impacts real lives and undermines human dignity.
Ongoing Conflict and Filmmaking Challenges
The conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran has persisted since February 28, 2023, and continues to influence various sectors, including film. As reported, the ongoing hostilities blocked several executives from attending the Hong Kong Filmart event. Filmmakers and industry professionals are closely monitoring the situation, as it may also affect attendance at the significant Cannes Film Festival, scheduled from May 12 to 23.
Farhadi’s New Project
Farhadi, currently residing outside Iran since early 2023, is set to debut his new film “Parallel Tales” at the Cannes Film Festival. The film features notable actors such as Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, and Catherine Deneuve. The festival’s Official Selection announcement is anticipated on April 9.

As tensions rise, Farhadi’s call to action highlights the role of artists in advocating for peace and humanity. His message resonates with the urgent need for dialogue in a turbulent global landscape.
