Canada Boosts Organ Donor Registration on Green Shirt Day

Green Shirt Day is encouraging Canadians to register as organ donors once again. This annual campaign is inspired by the tragic story of Logan Boulet, an Alberta-born junior hockey player.
Logan Boulet’s Legacy
On April 7, 2018, Logan Boulet, a 21-year-old defenceman for the Humboldt Broncos, lost his life in a devastating accident. The crash, which occurred when a truck driver ran a stop sign, resulted in 16 fatalities and 13 injuries. Boulet had always wished to be an organ donor, a decision that ultimately saved six lives.
Green Shirt Day and the Logan Boulet Effect
In honor of his legacy, Green Shirt Day was established. The initiative has significantly increased organ donor registrations across Canada. Following Boulet’s tragic death, approximately 150,000 Canadians registered as organ donors within just weeks. This surge in registrations became known as the “Logan Boulet Effect.”
Importance of Organ Donation
The necessity for organ donors remains critical in Canada. Many individuals await life-saving transplants, and campaigns like Green Shirt Day strive to raise awareness about the cause.
How to Get Involved
Canadians are encouraged to take part in Green Shirt Day by:
- Registering as organ donors.
- Spreading the word on social media using the hashtag #GreenShirtDay.
- Participating in community events organized around this important day.
Green Shirt Day serves not only as a reminder of Logan Boulet’s impact but also as a vital call-to-action for organ donation. The legacy of one young athlete continues to encourage life-saving decisions nationwide.
