Hegseth Severs Ivy League Ties, Chooses Hillsdale for Military Education

Hillsdale College has established itself as a key institution for military education by severing ties with Ivy League schools. This decision aligns with the Department of War’s initiative under Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is advocating for a shift away from schools he considers ideologically compromised.
Hillsdale College’s Commitment to Military Education
On March 30, Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn communicated the college’s eagerness to educate senior U.S. military officers. This was conveyed in a letter to Secretary Hegseth, who has prioritized strengthening military education in a new direction.
- Hillsdale College will participate in the Senior Service College Fellowship Program.
- The program is designed for advanced education of high-ranking military officers.
- The college emphasizes the U.S. Constitution and the “political philosophy of the West.”
Military Education Transformation
Recent changes to military education involve the cancellation of 93 fellowships previously offered through prestigious institutions like Harvard University and Princeton University. The Department of War’s memorandum highlights a pivot towards schools that emphasize intellectual freedom and reduced foreign ties.
In the letter, Arnn expressed appreciation for Hillsdale’s inclusion among the newly appointed educational institutions. He emphasized that Hillsdale’s independence is maintained by refusing government funds, ensuring that any initiative will be financed through private donations.
New Preferred Institutions
The shift in educational partnerships includes a range of institutions, notably:
- Hillsdale College
- Liberty University
- George Mason University
- Pepperdine University
- Baylor University
- University of Florida
- Auburn University
- University of North Carolina
- The Citadel and Virginia Tech
Criticism of Traditional Education
Arnn also voiced concerns about the influence of “anti-American ideologies” in many American colleges. He described Hillsdale as a bastion of constitutional education that aims to provide military leaders with the necessary knowledge for effective governance and national defense.
As military leaders prepare for future challenges, Hillsdale College seeks to play a significant role in redefining military education, moving away from prestigious but ideologically driven institutions to ones that better align with current defense strategies.
