Lawyer Rodrigo Martinez aims for success with the Dragons as he competes in the Challenge Cup. The Argentine international, with three caps for his country, has become an integral part of the Newport-based team.
Martinez’s Journey to the Dragons
Martinez has participated in 41 of the 62 games for the Dragons since joining the club. His career faced setbacks after being signed by Wasps in 2021, which later went into administration. Subsequently, he signed with London Irish, only for them to experience a similar fate before he made his debut.
“Moving to the Dragons has been beneficial,” Martinez stated. “There have been challenges, but I appreciate what we are building here. I enjoy the pursuit of becoming a better and winning team.”
Competing for a Starting Position
In his quest for a starting role, Martinez faces competition from notable players, including Welsh internationals Wyn Jones and the returning Rhodri Jones. He also contends with emerging talents Jordan Morris and Dylan Kelleher-Griffiths. “The internal competition is enhancing our overall performance,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of pushing each other. “It’s exciting to see the younger players step up and make their mark.”

Martinez understands the significance of scrummaging for props. “Everything starts at the scrum,” he asserted. He recently trained with the Pumas, participating in a camp last autumn and playing against Romania last summer. “Making impactful scrums, defending, and handling breakdowns provide me with confidence. If I execute these well, the attack will follow.”
