Falkirk Challenges SPFL with Scottish Premiership Dilemma

Falkirk is currently presenting challenges to the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) regarding the Scottish Premiership’s scheduling dilemmas. As the league approaches its final fixtures, discrepancies have arisen that complicate the matches leading up to the split.

Scheduling Challenges in the Scottish Premiership

As part of the season’s structure, the Premiership anticipates a split in the fixtures after a certain number of matches. However, several teams are facing the prospect of repeated travel. For instance, Dundee United will host one additional home game post-split, but they have already faced Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, Livingston, and St Mirren at Tannadice twice this season.

Issues with Repeated Opponents

  • Aberdeen is unlikely to return for a third time.
  • Kilmarnock also faces a dilemma, needing to play two home games while already hosting Dundee, St Mirren, and Aberdeen twice.
  • Livingston’s situation is precarious; they must travel again to face these opponents, which includes Aberdeen, Dundee, United, and Kilmarnock.

Livingston sits at the bottom of the table, currently 11 points adrift. If they lose their upcoming match before the split, this gap could increase to 14 points. This positions them as favorites for automatic relegation, although definitive confirmation will only come after further fixtures have been played.

Fixtures and Future Matches

The SPFL now faces a significant challenge in scheduling the final five rounds of fixtures. Following this weekend’s matches, a two-week break will occur to allow for the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

From April 25-26, the league will commence top-six and bottom-six fixtures, continuing until mid-May. The cup final and relegation play-off will follow this crucial period, adding to the complexity of the season’s conclusion.

The difficulties in scheduling are compounded by the need to accommodate teams that may have to travel multiple times within a condensed timeframe. The SPFL’s approach to resolving these issues will be closely monitored as the season progresses.
