Competition Heats Up for £30m Mega Container Facility at London Gateway

London Gateway Port is set to enhance its capabilities with an ambitious £30 million project for an advanced container storage facility. This initiative aims to construct a 12-storey automated empty container stacking facility at the Thurrock terminal. The project aligns with modern technological advancements and will significantly increase operational efficiency at the port.

Project Details

The new BOXBAY storage facility will have a striking height of approximately 55 meters. It will extend 323 meters in length and 159 meters in width, situated at the existing MT Park area of the terminal. This project involves a comprehensive scope of work, including:

  • Delivery of heavy civil works and deep foundations
  • Installation of a major structural steel package, requiring over 15,000 tonnes of steel
  • Application of 50,000 m² of cladding
  • Construction of a 46,500 m² roof

Groundworks and Infrastructure Challenges

Groundworks will pose significant challenges, necessitating over 5,000 precast piles, each measuring approximately 28 meters in length. These piles will support a reinforced concrete raft that is 1.2 meters deep. Furthermore, the contract will include comprehensive infrastructure works such as:

  • Drainage systems
  • Power supply
  • Firewater systems
  • IT systems
  • Heavy-duty pavements and ancillary buildings

One of the main challenges for contractors will be managing construction activities within an operational port. This scenario requires meticulous logistics, sequencing, and stringent safety measures.

Automation and Procurement Process

The BOXBAY facility will incorporate 15 automated storage retrieval machines that will operate on a dedicated 3 km rail system. Notably, the procurement process is designed to be competitive and flexible. It will commence with a selection stage, followed by invitations for shortlisted bidders to tender and negotiate.

Final bids will be evaluated based on a price-to-quality ratio of 60:40. Contract awards are anticipated in July, with the two-year construction phase expected to begin shortly thereafter. Contractors interested in participating must submit their requests by April 29.
