Rutland County Council and South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) are working together to clean up litter on the A1. This partnership began as a part of a 12-week pilot scheme, which commenced earlier this year. The collaboration includes SKDC’s street cleaning crews alongside Rutland’s own staff.
Deep Clean and Results
To kick off the pilot, a deep cleaning operation was executed on February 11. A team of 12 workers successfully removed 2,140 kilograms of litter from the A1 laybys. This staggering amount highlights the ongoing issue of litter in the area.
Community Engagement
Councillor Kiloran Heckels raised concerns over the litter situation during a recent council meeting. He expressed his distress about the increasing waste, especially upon entering Rutland. Responding to these concerns, new council leader Christine Wise emphasized the importance of community responsibility in maintaining cleanliness on the highway.
Long-term Solutions
The council is implementing measures to minimize littering. Last year, 25 rubbish bin housings were installed in laybys along the A1. However, some have been damaged by heavy goods vehicles. Discussions with National Highways are underway to secure these bins in locations less susceptible to damage.
