Unique Penguin Playpark Opens at Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo has officially unveiled a one-of-a-kind penguin-themed playpark, developed specifically for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS). This innovative area aims to provide children of all ages and abilities with a unique space for creative and interactive play.
Overview of the Unique Penguin Playpark
The centerpiece of the playpark is a giant penguin sculpture that towers at 4.9 meters and weighs approximately four tonnes. This remarkable structure is the only one of its kind globally, designed to inspire imaginative and inclusive play among children.
Design and Features
Created by KOMPAN for the wildlife conservation charity, the playpark boasts a striking design and a host of interactive elements. These features include:
- Optic panel
- Tic-tac-toe panel
- Music panel
- Drawing wall
- Talk tubes
The park is crafted from natural Robinia hardwood, encouraging climbing, balancing, sliding, and exploring. Unlike traditional playground equipment, the giant penguin promotes open-ended play, allowing children to invent their own adventures and challenges.
Educational and Social Impact
Beccy Angus, head of discovery and learning at RZSS, emphasizes the playpark’s role in linking play with learning. She noted that this unique space encourages family engagement and offers educational experiences about wildlife. The playpark creates opportunities for children to communicate, engage their senses, and develop self-regulation skills in a fun environment.
Community and Funding
The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust funded the establishment of this vibrant space for families, reinforcing Edinburgh Zoo’s dedication to providing engaging, educational, and inclusive experiences for all visitors.
Families are invited to explore the Unique Penguin Playpark, where they can pause, play, and connect in a captivating setting. Tickets to the zoo can be booked online for added convenience.
