Diageo Appoints John O’Keeffe as North America CEO

Diageo, the company behind Johnnie Walker, has appointed John O’Keeffe as North America CEO. This decision comes after the immediate departure of Sally Grimes from the role.
Leadership Change at Diageo North America
John O’Keeffe will now lead the North American division of Diageo. He transitions from his previous role as president of Asia Pacific and global travel retail.
Since joining Diageo in January 1994, O’Keeffe has held various positions, including global head of innovation and managing director for Russia and Eastern Europe. His broad experience equips him well to guide the North American operations.
Company Statement
A spokesperson for Diageo praised O’Keeffe as a respected leader who excels at building high-performing teams and forging strong partnerships. They noted that his expertise in consumer engagement and brand management positions him effectively to lead North America in the coming years.
Impact of Sally Grimes’ Departure
Sally Grimes only took on the North America CEO role in September 2023, having come from Clif Bar & Company. The company expressed gratitude for her contributions and extended best wishes for her future endeavors.
Current Financial Landscape
Diageo’s North American sales have seen a decrease of 6.8% in the first half of the 2026 fiscal year. Notably, this region accounts for 36% of Diageo’s net sales.
Following the release of these financial results, CEO Sir Dave Lewis emphasized a strategy to target the mass market, an area he believes has not been adequately addressed by the company.
Recent Developments
In addition to leadership changes, Diageo’s Indian subsidiary recently sold its Premier League cricket business for INR 166.6 billion, equivalent to approximately US$1.77 billion. Meanwhile, competitors Pernod Ricard and Brown-Forman are reportedly in discussions regarding a potential merger.
