Blaydon Car Buff Acquires Tom Cruise’s Jeep from Mission Impossible Finale

In a notable acquisition, Blaydon resident Gavin Larkin has purchased a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon previously driven by Tom Cruise in the final installment of the Mission Impossible film franchise. At 54 years old, Larkin found the vehicle during an online auction and has since been intrigued by its unique story.

Unique Vehicle with a Rich History

Larkin’s keen interest in Jeep models led him to discover the auction listing for what was called ‘Ethan 1’. After researching, he learned that this Jeep was among five vehicles used during filming in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film made waves for its thrilling chase scenes, some of which were filmed at a quarry in Derbyshire.

A Savvy Investment

Gavin Larkin successfully bid £17,000 for the Jeep, a significant reduction from its standard price of around £45,000. The vehicle was marketed as non-working, but its cinematic pedigree made it an appealing investment for Larkin.

  • Vehicle Type: Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
  • Purchase Price: £17,000
  • Standard Price: Approximately £45,000
  • Production Use: One of five stunt vehicles in the film
  • Filming Location: Derbyshire quarry

Future Plans for the Jeep

Now, Larkin is focused on restoring the Jeep to roadworthy condition. He plans to maintain its original look, reflecting its appearance in the film. Currently, he is working with the DVLA to ensure proper registration and is also exploring the option of adding a soft top to the vehicle.

Interestingly, Tom Cruise kept one of the least damaged stunt cars after filming, while the others were sold for parts. Larkin expresses excitement about his unique possession, describing it as a “one-off” that he intends to keep true to its cinematic roots.

Connections to the Film Industry

The world of Mission: Impossible also connects with local businesses. For instance, Gayle Foster, owner of Vintage at the Tower in Northumberland, supplied handbags and jewelry featured in the film. Her boutique has been a fixture in the community since 2013.

Gavin Larkin’s exciting purchase not only reflects a personal passion but also connects the local community to the larger film industry, showcasing the impact of cinema on everyday enthusiasts.
