Jitesh Sharma Downplays RCB’s Defending Champions Status

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has downplayed the significance of the team’s defending champions status as they prepare to chase the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 title. Speaking at a recent press conference, Sharma emphasized the need to focus on the present season, rather than dwell on past achievements.
RCB’s Preparation for IPL 2026
Sharma mentioned that the team is taking a strategic approach. He quoted RCB’s director of cricket, Mo Bobat, stating, “Frankly speaking, it is irrelevant. We are not defending; we are chasing the title.” The RCB squad is committed to treating each match as a new challenge, aiming to build on their past successes.
Impact Player Rule Positive for Team
During the press conference, Jitesh Sharma shared his thoughts on the Impact Player rule, which was introduced in the IPL in 2023. This rule allows teams to substitute one player from a pool of four during a match. Sharma appreciates the opportunity this gives to Indian players on the bench, enhancing competition.
Training and Game Preparation
Regarding the team’s training regimen, Sharma outlined their preparation strategy. The players began with a recovery period featuring swimming and gym work. They then engaged in a high-intensity practice game, simulating pressure situations to enhance their tactical and mental readiness for upcoming matches.
Strong Start to the Season
The RCB began their IPL 2026 campaign impressively, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets in the first match of the tournament. Star player Virat Kohli scored a remarkable 69 runs off 38 balls, contributing to the team’s successful chase of a 202-run target in just 15.4 overs.
Upcoming Match Against Chennai Super Kings
Next, RCB will face the struggling Chennai Super Kings, who have experienced two consecutive losses this season. The match promises to be crucial as RCB looks to continue their winning momentum.
