UFC Newcomer Jose Delano Credits Army Service for MMA Career Revival

Jose Delano, a newcomer in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), attributes his MMA career revival to his experience in the Brazilian army. He makes his UFC debut on April 4, 2023, against former KSW champion Robert Ruchala at UFC Vegas 115.

From Military Service to MMA Comeback

Delano grew up in Recife, Brazil, where he discovered his passion for martial arts early in life. Initially, he faced challenges as a professional fighter, achieving a mix of victories and defeats in unsanctioned matches not counted in his official record.

In 2016, Delano enlisted in the cavalry-mechanized infantry, believing a military career would provide him with stability that MMA could not. Reflecting on this time, Delano said, “I was lost… and I started shaping my life according to the army.” Although he excelled as a soldier, he eventually realized that his true calling lay elsewhere.

Rediscovering a Passion

After years away from the sport, Delano returned to his roots in MMA when his uncle encouraged him to pursue his passion rather than settle for a life in physical education. This discussion reignited Delano’s desire to compete and succeed in mixed martial arts.

  • Official MMA Record: 2-2
  • Underground Fights: Prior bouts not reflecting in his official record
  • Notable Wins: Tapped out Leandro Lopes in November 2017

He moved to Rio de Janeiro to train at Brazilian Top Team under former UFC champion Murilo Bustamante. Delano quickly became a standout featherweight prospect, eventually earning the LFA championship.

The Path to UFC

Delano’s journey to the UFC culminated in a decisive victory over Manuel Exposito on Dana White’s Contender Series. He dedicates his MMA accomplishments to spiritual guidance, stating, “Thanks to the Lord Jesus, He took me out of the army… I want you to go around the world and speak my word.”

As a newly signed UFC fighter, Delano has previously turned down opportunities to attend live events, including UFC 301 in 2024, insisting he would only enter the arena as a competitor. His first live UFC experience was in October 2025.

Anticipation for UFC Vegas 115

Delano acknowledges the heightened stakes of his UFC debut. He has expressed confidence in his preparation and commitment to delivering an exciting performance. As he faces Ruchala, he notes the challenges ahead, stating, “There are no easy fights now.”

Delano anticipates a thrilling contest, promising fans a fight full of action and intensity. He stated, “If he wants to stand and trade with me, it’ll be me and him throwing down for three rounds.”

With his background in both military service and martial arts, Jose Delano embodies resilience and determination as he steps into the octagon for his debut. His story serves as an inspiration to others who face similar crossroads in life.
