Dunstone Secures Eighth Win, Sets Up Qualification Showdown with Italy

Canada’s men’s curling team achieved a significant milestone by winning their eighth consecutive game, but they fell short of securing an automatic spot in the semifinals at the world championship. Matt Dunstone’s team from Winnipeg defeated Norway 7-5 in an extra end after earlier overpowering Germany with a score of 9-2 at the Weber County Ice Sheet. With this victory, Canada finished the round-robin stage with a 10-2 record.
Dunstone’s Team Stands Out in Round-Robin Play
Despite tying with Sweden and Scotland for the best records in the preliminary rounds, Canada was placed as the third seed due to a tiebreaker. “After our two losses on Saturday and Sunday, we aimed for a 10-2 finish,” Dunstone stated. “We achieved that goal. Unfortunately, it didn’t grant us a bye to the semifinals.”
Canada’s ongoing success continues, as they head into a qualification showdown against Italy. Dunstone stressed the importance of starting strong, saying, “We need to score early and manage the game as it unfolds.” This matchup will take place on Friday morning.
Semifinal Matches and Standings
While Canada prepares for its clash with the sixth seed Italy, other qualification matches are also on the schedule. Switzerland will compete against the United States for a chance at the semifinal.
- Canada: 10-2
- Sweden: Semifinal bye
- Scotland: Semifinal bye
- Italy: 8-4
Upcoming Games and Historical Context
The bronze- and gold-medal matches are set for Saturday. Canada last claimed the world curling championship in 2017, led by Brad Gushue’s rink. Dunstone is making his senior-level debut for Canada after winning this year’s Brier in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Canada’s previous encounter with Italy ended favorably, with a decisive 9-2 victory in the second round of the tournament. As the pressure of the qualification round looms, Dunstone and his teammates are focused on solidifying their place in the competition.
