Salzburg Expands Sidewalks for Enhanced Pedestrian Access

Salzburg is taking significant steps to enhance pedestrian accessibility by expanding its sidewalks. The city plans to implement six major projects aimed at improving the walking experience for residents and visitors alike. The initiatives were announced by Deputy Mayor Kay-Michael Dankl from KPÖ Plus.
Upcoming Sidewalk Improvements in Salzburg
The city will begin several key projects to promote pedestrian traffic. Noteworthy improvements include:
- Hellbrunn Castle Area: Renovation of the sidewalk along Fürstenweg, extending from the bus stop to Hellbrunn Castle.
- Alten Aigner Straße: Sidewalk widening and unsealing project to start in late summer. This will stretch from Glaserstraße to the parking lot near Aigen Cemetery.
- Pauernfeindstraße: A new sidewalk will be constructed between Vogelweiderstraße and Dr.-Hans-Lechner-Park in Schallmoos.
- Funkenstraße Extension: Preparations are underway for further developments in the Funkenstraße section, adjacent to Pauernfeindstraße.
Objective of the Sidewalk Expansion
The primary aim of these improvements is to make pedestrian traffic safer and more attractive. This is especially important for families and individuals with mobility limitations.
Public Support for Pedestrian Safety
A recent survey conducted by the Verkehrsclub Österreich highlighted the need for better pedestrian infrastructure. Findings revealed that:
- Nearly 50% of Salzburg residents regularly walk distances of two kilometers or more.
- Respondents indicated a pressing need for improved sidewalks, safe street crossings, and designated areas for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Approximately 75% of participants urge local government to prioritize these infrastructural enhancements.
These sidewalk expansions reflect Salzburg’s commitment to fostering a more pedestrian-friendly environment and addressing the emerging needs of its community.
