Jérémy Lauzon Impressed by John Tortorella’s Leadership

John Tortorella has taken the helm of the Vegas Golden Knights with the aim of revitalizing the team. His arrival follows the dismissal of Bruce Cassidy, who previously led the team to a Stanley Cup victory in June 2022. Jérémy Lauzon, a defenseman for the Knights, shared his thoughts on the recent changes within the organization.

Change in Leadership with Tortorella

Three days after the announcement of Cassidy’s departure, Lauzon reflected on the surprising nature of the decision. He mentioned that he had built a strong relationship with Cassidy over their time together in Boston, where Lauzon began his NHL career. He stated, “Bruce was my coach during my first three seasons in the NHL. We were all a bit surprised by his firing, especially so late in the season.”

Despite the shock, Lauzon emphasized the need for the players to step up their game. “We need to roll up our sleeves and play better hockey,” he asserted.

Tortorella’s Expectations

During his first address to the Golden Knights, Tortorella encouraged the players to adopt a faster pace and regain their winning mentality. Lauzon noted, “Tortorella reminded us that he is coaching one of the most talented teams in his career. He wants us to play with more rhythm and confidence.”

Building Under Pressure

Under General Manager Kelly McCrimmon’s direction, the Golden Knights have a strong desire to win immediately. McCrimmon felt that the team needed a new voice and decided to make the change just before the 74th game of the season.

As of late March 2025, the Knights have a record of 33-26-16, totaling 82 points and placing them third in the Pacific Division. Lauzon commented, “We are fortunate to be in the Pacific Division. Our goal is to build our game before the playoffs and enter them with confidence.”

Personal Performance and Team Dynamics

Lauzon expressed satisfaction with his role since joining the Knights after three seasons with the Nashville Predators. He has yet to score his first goal with the team but remains focused on his defensive responsibilities. With 225 hits and 93 blocked shots, his contributions have been significant, alongside an ice-time average of over 17 minutes.

“I would love to score my first goal; it would boost my morale,” he said, humorously reflecting on his ongoing search for that milestone. He continues to embrace his identity as a physical defenseman.

A Fresh Start in Vegas

Tortorella, who was let go by the Philadelphia Flyers last season, brings experience and a winning mentality to the Golden Knights. Recently, he coached Team USA to a gold medal at the Olympics, sharing the locker room with players like Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin. Now, they unite in Las Vegas with the common goal of success.

With Tortorella’s leadership and Lauzon’s commitment, the Golden Knights aim to reignite their journey toward the playoffs.
