NMC Unveils Extent of Dismissals for Bullying and Racism

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has revealed the substantial measures it has taken to address incidents of bullying and racism within the organization. In the last 18 months, the NMC has dismissed 18 employees due to bullying or racist behavior. This information was confirmed by the NMC following an internal review.
NMC’s Commitment to Cultural Transformation
A recent review of the NMC’s organizational culture highlighted significant issues related to bullying, racism, and sexism. This review was conducted by former chief public prosecutor Nazir Afzal and prompted action from the NMC to mend its reputation. The investigation arose after a whistleblower reported a culture of fear and cronyism within the organization.
Key Findings from the Review
- 18 staff members dismissed for bullying or racist behavior.
- Review revealed a toxic workplace culture.
- Documented incidents of sexism alongside racism and bullying.
In response to the findings, the NMC has rolled out a culture transformation plan and signed the Unison anti-racism charter. Chief Executive Paul Rees, appointed after the review, emphasizes the organization’s zero-tolerance approach toward these behaviors.
Implementation of New Values
The NMC has introduced a new set of core values intended to reshape its organizational culture. These values include integrity, fairness, respect, equity, and effectiveness. Rees stated that these principles are part of a framework to cultivate the desired behaviors within the organization.
Future Directions and Employee Feedback
Rees noted that while initial signs of improvement are evident, further actions are necessary to ensure meaningful change. He reported receiving positive feedback from staff, indicating a shift in the workplace atmosphere:
- Increased communication among staff regarding cultural changes.
- Continuation of coaching programs for managers to facilitate transformation.
The NMC remains committed to holding individuals accountable for bullying and racist conduct. The organization is determined to create an environment where such behaviors will not be tolerated, reinforcing their commitment to diversity and inclusion within the healthcare regulatory framework.
