Passengers throughout England will soon have access to real-time bus tracking via Google Maps. This feature is set to launch on Thursday, providing users with live updates on bus locations and arrival times. The initiative aims to alleviate the uncertainty typically associated with bus travel, according to the Department for Transport.
Enhanced Public Transport with Real-Time Tracking
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted that this technology acts like popular ride-hailing apps, allowing passengers to know precisely when to expect their bus. This feature is especially beneficial for women and girls, as it enables them to plan their journeys more effectively and enhances their safety while using public transport.
Rolling Out Across England
While residents in London have previously used similar services, this marks the first time real-time tracking will be available to all of England, including rural communities. Alexander emphasized the importance of eliminating the guesswork in public transport, saying:
- “Passengers should not be left guessing when their bus will turn up, no matter where they live.”
- “This is a step towards a more joined-up transport network fit for the modern day.”
Challenges and Concerns
Despite the excitement surrounding this advancement, concerns linger over mobile network coverage in rural areas. A House of Commons report from December noted that while 99% of England has access to 4G from at least one provider, comprehensive coverage from all four major operators is only 88%. Furthermore, Ofcom’s Spring 2025 update projects that 65% of the UK landmass will have 5G coverage from at least one provider.
Bus Service Cuts and Recovery Efforts
The new tracking feature comes amidst significant cuts to bus services across the country, especially in rural regions. An analysis from 2024 revealed that local councils had reduced bus routes by a staggering 16 million miles over the past 15 years. Since 2010, overall bus mileage has diminished by over 300 million miles, according to government data.
