Winter Storm Alert: Snow, Ice, and Sleet Forecast for Northern Michigan

As northern Michigan braces for another round of severe winter weather, significant snowfall and ice accumulation are anticipated. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for various counties regarding the impending storm.

Winter Storm Alert for Northern Michigan

Between 8 a.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday, regions in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, such as Keweenaw, Houghton, Ontonagon, and Houghton counties, are forecasted to receive 2-5 inches of snow and sleet. Additionally, the storm may produce up to a quarter of an inch of ice, combined with wind gusts reaching 40 mph.

The NWS advises residents to prepare for treacherous travel conditions that could impact commutes. Important safety tips include:

The winter storm is not only affecting Michigan; states such as Wisconsin and Minnesota are also expected to endure several inches of snow, sleet, and ice accumulation.

Winter Weather Advisory for Lower Michigan

Meanwhile, northern Lower Michigan is under a winter weather advisory from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. This area will see freezing rain transitioning to rain as temperatures increase throughout the day. Areas like Arenac, Gladwin, Iosco, Ogemaw, and Roscommon counties may experience up to two-tenths of an inch of ice. The remainder of northern Lower Michigan could see up to one-tenth of an inch.

Severe Weather Alerts in Lower Michigan

In addition to wintry conditions, a cold front is pushing through Lower Michigan, creating a slight risk for tornadoes and hail. The NWS indicates that winds in Lower Michigan could gust up to 60 mph on Thursday evening. Hailstones could reach up to an inch in diameter, risking damage in some areas.

Regions with a heightened threat include:

  • Western and central Lower Michigan: slight risk of isolated tornadoes
  • Northern Lower Michigan, the Thumb, and southeast Michigan: marginal risk of tornadoes
