Lionel Carmant Returns to CAQ Ranks

The political landscape in Quebec is shifting as Lionel Carmant rejoins the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party. He made this announcement in a press conference with outgoing Premier François Legault on Wednesday morning.

Lionel Carmant’s Return to CAQ

Carmant, a former minister of social services, expressed his gratitude towards Legault, stating, “When I left, François was there for me.” His return comes during a critical time for the CAQ, just a week before Legault leads his final cabinet meeting.

Background on Carmant’s Departure

In January, Premier Legault announced his resignation amid declining poll results and internal challenges. Carmant, who had been a supporter of Legault, left the CAQ last October, becoming an Independent. His decision followed dissatisfaction with a law regarding salary conditions for doctors.

  • Joined CAQ: 2011
  • Entered National Assembly: 2018
  • Re-elected: 2022
  • Left CAQ: October 2022

Fréchette’s Leadership Bid

Carmant had recently stated on social media that he would return to the CAQ if Christine Fréchette was elected as the new leader on April 12. She is currently competing against MNA Bernard Drainville for the position.

Legault’s Praise for Carmant

Legault commended Carmant, calling him one of the “greatest neuro pediatricians in the world.” During his tenure as the social services minister, Carmant made significant contributions to the field.

Looking Ahead

Despite his return to the CAQ, Carmant has confirmed that he will not seek a position in the upcoming provincial election. His focus remains on supporting the party and its future under new leadership.
