Trump Claims Iran Seeks Deal to End War, Denies Personal Involvement

President Donald Trump recently addressed the ongoing conflict with Iran during a televised cabinet meeting at the White House. He aimed to underscore the benefits of the conflict, which has unfolded over the last month, while attempting to lessen concerns regarding its economic repercussions.
Trump’s Assertions on Iran Negotiations
Trump asserted that Iran is eager to negotiate a peace deal, stating, “They are begging to make a deal. Not me. They’re begging to make it.” He maintained that the U.S. possesses a strong position in negotiations due to the joint military operations with Israel against Iran.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, confirmed that he provided Iran with a “15-point action list” aimed at creating a framework for peace. He emphasized that the goal is to show Iran that the current situation offers little alternative to further conflict.
Responses from Iran and International Involvement
Despite Trump’s claims, Iran has publicly dismissed the proposed 15-point plan. The tensions have drawn in international mediators as well, with Pakistan’s foreign minister suggesting indirect communications between the U.S. and Iran.
During the cabinet meeting, cabinet members lauded Trump’s efforts, with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth asserting that Trump’s actions would protect future generations from nuclear threats.
Economic Impacts of the Conflict
Amid the cabinet discussions, economic indicators reflected the war’s potential fallout. The price of Brent crude oil rose by over 4% recently, reaching closer to $4 per gallon for gasoline in the U.S. Trump minimized the conflict’s effect on the U.S. economy, asserting, “We have so much oil, our country is not affected by this.”
- Brent crude oil price increase: Over 4%
- U.S. national average gasoline price: Close to $4 per gallon, up $1 since the conflict began.
Despite these assertions, prices have climbed partly due to Iran restricting access through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route through which about 100 ships traditionally pass daily.
Future Negotiations and Military Strategy
In a notable development, Trump issued a 10-day pause on strikes against Iranian power facilities. He indicated that this would allow time for potential negotiations, suggesting that Iran has a chance to move away from its nuclear ambitions. He noted, “If they don’t, we’re their worst nightmare.” Trump mentioned that the U.S. remains ahead of the initial four to six-week timeline predicted at the campaign’s start.
The ongoing situation reflects a complex blend of military strategy, economic concerns, and international diplomacy, with significant implications for both regional and global stability.
