FSE Files Formal Complaint on Excessive 2026 World Cup Ticket Prices

The Football Supporters’ European Federation (FSE) has filed a formal complaint regarding ticket prices for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. This complaint, submitted alongside Euroconsumers to the European Commission, highlights concerns over excessive pricing and unclear purchasing conditions imposed by FIFA on European fans.
FIFA’s Ticket Sales Monopoly
The complaint asserts that FIFA has exploited its dominance in ticket sales, leading to conditions that would not stand in a competitive market. FSE and Euroconsumers have identified six specific abuses, including:
- Imposing excessive ticket prices.
- Implementing opaque purchasing conditions.
- Bait advertising, with later releases of cheaper tickets being nearly impossible to find.
FIFA’s spokesperson responded by stating that they have yet to formally receive the complaint, thus limiting their ability to comment in detail. However, they emphasized their commitment to fair access for fans, noting that as a not-for-profit organization, revenues from ticket sales are reinvested in the growth of football across their 211 member associations.
Ticket Availability and Pricing
Approximately 400 tickets are available for the matches between England and Scotland, priced at £45 each. For those wishing to attend all eight matches in the tournament, ticket costs vary significantly:
| Price Tier | Cost for 8 Matches |
|---|---|
| Lowest Price | £5,225 |
| Middle Tier | £8,580 |
| Highest Price | £12,350 |
In comparison, ticket prices for the 2022 World Cup were considerably lower, with costs ranging from £1,466 to £3,914 for seven games. This stark difference raises concerns about accessibility and affordability for fans.
Calls for Greater Transparency
FSE director Ronan Evain expressed disappointment with FIFA’s lack of meaningful consultation. He stated that loyal fans are left with no choice but to either pay exorbitant prices or miss out on attending matches. This ongoing issue emphasizes the need for transparency in ticket sales and fair treatment for fans.
