Nor’wester Strikes Kolkata; More Storms Expected

An intense nor’wester struck Kolkata on Monday night, marking the city’s fourth storm of the month. This weather event brought heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds.
Weather Forecast and Implications
Following the storm, meteorologists at the Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata predict further thunderstorms on Tuesday. H R Biswas, the head meteorologist, indicated that the rainfall could be moderate with similar conditions.
Temperature Impact
The sudden downpour led to a slight decrease in temperature, with the mercury dropping by two degrees Celsius. As reported, the maximum temperature was recorded at 32.5 degrees Celsius, which is 2.2 degrees below the seasonal average. The minimum temperature was noted at 26.3 degrees Celsius.
Weather Systems at Play
Multiple weather systems are contributing to the ongoing thundershowers in Kolkata. Key factors include:
- An east-west trough extending from northeast Bihar to Manipur, passing through North Bangladesh, Meghalaya, and southeast Assam.
- Another trough from Bihar to Gangetic Bengal, traversing Jharkhand.
- A favorable wind pattern combined with moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal.
From Wednesday onwards, the city is expected to experience dry weather, with temperatures anticipated to rise once again.
