Air Canada Employee Charged in Alleged Weed Smuggling at Pearson Airport

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that an Air Canada employee has been charged in connection with a significant cannabis smuggling attempt at Toronto’s Pearson Airport. The individual is accused of attempting to transport over 60 kilograms of cannabis using the luggage of two unwitting travelers.
Details of the Smuggling Attempt
On February 19, authorities from the Canada Border Services Agency alerted the RCMP after finding approximately 33 kilograms of cannabis in the luggage of two German passengers set to fly to Germany. The suitcases, tagged with the passengers’ names, were identical, and both travelers denied any ownership of the bags.
Charges Filed
A 32-year-old employee from Mississauga, Ontario, has been charged with serious offenses. The charges include:
- Possession of cannabis for the purpose of export
- Conspiracy to commit an indictable offense related to the attempted smuggling
Both passengers cooperated with the authorities and were released without any charges against them.
Investigation Findings
The investigation revealed that the Air Canada employee, who worked in the baggage area, had tagged the cannabis-filled suitcases with the names of the unsuspecting travelers. This method of smuggling highlighted vulnerabilities within airport security protocols.
As the case develops, it raises concerns about internal security measures at major airports and the potential for similar incidents in the future.
