Amazon Temporarily Removes Downloader from Fire TV and Tablet Appstore

Amazon temporarily removed the Downloader app from its Appstore for Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices. This decision raised concerns among users, as the app has been a reliable tool for accessing content for over nine years.

Reason for the Suspension

The primary reason cited for the suspension was Amazon’s policy that restricts third-party browser applications on its platforms. Recently, the app underwent an update, version 2.0, which changed its functionality to register as a browser. This update allowed Downloader to open links from other applications, which likely led to the suspension.

Developer’s Response

The developer has responded swiftly to the suspension. He submitted an updated version, 2.0.2, which reverts the app to its previous behavior and does not register as a browser. This change aims to align with Amazon’s guidelines, and approval from Amazon is expected to restore the app to the Appstore in a few days.

User Instructions

  • If you already have Downloader installed, do not uninstall it.
  • Go to Settings > Applications and disable “Auto Offload” to prevent automatic uninstallation.
  • Ignore any alternative apps that claim to be Downloader, as many are scams.

Warning Against Scams

A specific app, “Downloader for Fire, Browser…”, has been flagged as a scam. Users are advised not to download this app, which charges $6.99 weekly. Reports of such scam apps should be made to Amazon to aid in their removal.

Current Status

The Downloader app is reportedly back in the Fire TV Appstore. The developer has promised to keep users updated regarding any further developments.
