Royal Mail Advises Posting a Four-Word Sign on Doors or Windows

Royal Mail has recommended that customers display a four-word sign on their doors or windows to improve delivery safety. With the approach of Easter, a busy delivery period, the postal service is stressing the urgency of this action. The sign, which reads “I have a dog,” alerts delivery workers to potential risks, ensuring they wait until pets are secured.

Increasing Incidents of Dog Attacks

According to statistics from the Royal Mail, incidents of dog attacks increased by 2% in the previous year, totaling 2,197 attacks. This averages out to approximately 42 attacks per week across the UK, with many postal workers experiencing serious injuries.

Safety Measures for Postal Workers

To enhance safety for postal staff, Royal Mail urges residents to take specific actions:

  • Do not open the door until your dog is secured.
  • Restrict dogs to another room or behind a gate before opening.
  • Ensure gates and doors are closed to prevent escapes.
  • Consider installing a letterbox cage to avoid attacks from pets.
  • Provide alternative delivery options if securing pets is challenging.

Community Responsibility and Postal Worker Safety

Royal Mail is committed to improving safety measures and calls on communities to play a proactive role in securing pets before delivery personnel arrive. Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of attacks and ensure timely deliveries.
