Fast Food Chain Revitalizes Shuttered Restaurant with New Beginnings

Plans are underway for a revitalization of a former Pizza Hut in Swindon, which closed its doors in January 2025. The location has since remained vacant, prompting McDonald’s to step in with new proposals. In February 2026, Swindon Borough Council approved McDonald’s plans, allowing for significant renovations at the site.
Revamping the Old Pizza Hut Location
The renovation involves a partial demolition of the existing structure to create a drive-thru and hot food takeaway. Since receiving approval, McDonald’s has commenced construction efforts by fencing off the car park. Heavy machinery and construction materials are now visible on-site, including large piles of rubble and portable facilities.
Construction Details
- The old building will undergo extensive internal gutting.
- Changes to the roof will transform the mansard style to a flatter design.
- The new layout will not include a seating area.
- Sixteen parking spaces will be eliminated, leaving a total of 29.
Noteworthy changes include the removal of tables, chairs, and kitchen equipment, although some fixtures like the old wallpaper remain intact. The adjustments aim to optimize the restaurant for takeaway and drive-thru services, potentially including delivery options.
Community Concerns
Local businesses and residents have raised significant concerns regarding this development. Many fear that the new drive-thru will create traffic congestion on Whitehill Way, potentially obstructing access to the leisure park and other nearby establishments.
In response to a public planning notification, over thirty residents voiced their opposition to McDonald’s proposal. They highlighted the risk of long queues impacting both customer access and overall traffic flow.
As the construction progresses, community input remains crucial. Stakeholders are keen to ensure that the revitalization of this fast food chain contributes positively to the area, without causing unwanted disruption.
